text from education booklet:

Colin Darke is a conceptual artist based in the North of Ireland. He was originally attracted to working at Cable Street because of the renowned history of the area, namely the 1936 'riots' against the Blackshirts. His work for the exhibition is subtle. He has chipped away at the very walls of Cable Street Gallery to expose the brickwork underneath. The dimensions of the plaster removed correspond to 5 paintings produced in 1936 such as Mondrian's Vertical Composition with Blue and White. He highlights the location of the work in order to point out a relationship between the production of art and the social/political context within which it is made. Art does not exist outside of society and Darke puts the onus on artists to be socially responsible.
