Europe the Game

2004 Beaconsfield Gallery, London

The Moral Plinth

Players are asked to choose which of the 54 oil painted landscapes of Europe fit into a frame that can contain a maximum of 36 pieces. Choices are based on players' own criteria.

  • Europe the Game
  • Each player must choose 1 tile of the 54 tiles.
  • Decide on the basis of appearance whether or not it is or appears to be European.
  • If you decide it is European, place the tile inside the frame.
  • Repeat with all 54 tiles, taking it in turns with all players.
  • On filling the frame, decide whether some tiles may have to be removed to make room for others. If so, then remove those tiles and add others.
  • Players must negotiate which tile is in and which is out.
  • There may be no simple conclusion to this game.
