Mohini Chandra 'Flow' Mohini Chandra's soundscape 'Flow' was located at the corner of Brick Lane and Hanbury Street. Drawing on the language and metaphor of water, 'Flow' picked up the sounds of the street on a microphone and converted them, through computer software, to water sounds. There was a direct relationship between the amount of people on the street and the types of water sounds emitted by the speakers. When it was quiet and there were only a few people on the street, you hear drips. When the street became filled with tourist traffic, the water sounds became torrents. Interestingly, while most passers-by spotted Jananne Al-Ani's 20ft projection, musicians always heard Mohini Chandra's piece first and would stop, searching for clues and more information because of it. Like Jananne's piece, it became a hook for the rest of the exhibition, a way into exploring the ideas in curio. |
