The Private View of EAST international05 selected by Gustav Metzger
(requires Flash, sound and a download time that allows for 1MB)

ti: How did this intervention come to happen?

AJ: I applied to EAST for 2005 because it was Gustav Metzger who was selecting and I admire his politics. Also because it was meant to be the "dematerialized" exhibition. I sent EAST 3 proposals, including the one which offers this sponsorship artwork, where The Guidebook proposed sponsoring EAST. I was rejected.
'Jonathan Pierce' was accepted with his proposal to host a salon de refuses. In the end, I sponsored Jonathan Pierce's Salon.

ti: How much for?

AJ: We, at The Guidebook, believe in contemporary art and in supporting artists. He was offered and accepted a cheque for £1.

ti: What are you offering people at the Private View of EAST?

AJ: We offered artists the opportunity to meet and shake hands with an official sponsor. They were offered a sweetner for this relationship. They had the choice of a variety of sweets, in exchange for one of our cards. The sweets were mostly nostalgic ones including Flying Saucers and Parma Violets. They were also offered the chance to be photographed. Everyone bar one was happily photographed. The exception was a journalist for the Financial Times.
